Hello my head-phoned friends! To celebrate the launch of our new facebook page, Podcast 21 is the best part of 2 hours and brings you some jolly spiffing house music.

We have also dug up some photos of parties gone by for old times sake. So come like us, not that we’re lonely but we’ll make sure you get yourselves first dibs on some lovely, spanking new mixes.

All by Myself

With DJ experience almost 30 years, born and bred Queens boy Joeski sure knows how to take things deep.

Throughout the 2000s, his originals and remix work have been well in demand, with Joeski remixing the likes of the Sneaker Pimps, Dajaé, Delacy, Dirty Vegas, Medway, DJ Sneak and more. He’s appeared on such labels as Hooj Choons, NRK, Ministry, Stealth and Junior Boys Own.

I stumbled across this track being played by Buzzin’ Fly’s Ben Watt (check out his DJ Mag Mix CD). All the fruits of his DJing career have been poured into building his label Maya Records. I absolutely love this kind of stuff, closing your eyes on the dancefloor and losing yourself in its hypnotic percussion and echoed lyric.

Delusionally Good?

I also have to make a mention in the way of London record label Delusions of Grandure. From which Tornado Wallace’s track Whispering Twirl came from.

An enclave of both established artists and fresh, undiscovered talent whose shared passion of deep underground Detroit-inspired house and disco are reflected in the quality output you will come to expect from the label.

Since its inception one year ago Delusions Of Grandeur have built an incredible reputation from the underground club scene through just 10 releases from producers such as DJ Nature, The Revenge, John Daly, 6th Borough Project, Session Victim, Kalabrese, CB Funk, Trickski, Manuel Tur, Tim Toh, Soultourist, Tornado Wallace, Linkwood and Franc Spangler.

Fans of the label include a whole host of DJʼs regularly controlling dancefloors worldwide including Deetron, Seth Troxler, Tim Sweeny, Soul Clap, Sebo K, Akufen, Charles Webster, Ewan Pearson and Ben Watt to name a few.

The sophistication of production, use of melody etc. has repositioned its place within dance music. This podcast is a reflection of that melodic, intellegent side of Drum & Bass that I am attracted to.

The South London record label Hospital was founded in 1996 by Tony Colman and Chris Goss whom had both been working together previously on house music projects.

A majority of the tracks stem from the Sick Music Compilation that was released towards the middle of last year. A collection of tracks that typify the soulful, uplifting style of D&B that Hospital champions. Tony Colman (AKA London Elektricity) presents the pretty much weekly Hospital records podcast (already on its 128th episode) that is a good barometer of the genre’s current direction. Failing that, you can always have a giggle at Tony’s witty (if a little) opinionated rants that regularly take over his broadcasts.

Danny Byrd’s Ill Behaviour recently graced the top 40 and hit a score Radio One playlists, this in addition to performing on Pete Tong’s Essential Mix can only confirm the healthy state of D&B today.

We also tip a hat to the old skool in the form of Danny Break’s Droppin’ Science Volume One, updated by Logistics, and a release from the Metalheadz label with Spectrasoul’s Guardian. Metalheadz was formed 2 years before Hospital by Goldie and Kemistry & Storm and includes artists such as Adam F, Grooverider, Photek.

There is nothing quite like a gospel house belter and in 1994 CeCe Rogers did just that, singing for Jestofunk on Club Tools. Kenneth Rogers III was nicknamed CC by James Brown after seeing him impersonating Chubby Checker at the tender age of 11.

No Ears

Rocket’s People featured on Carnivalism’s very first compilation back in 2002 which you can still get hold of here. Back in the day when when cds were more common than downloads. This No Ears version by Rob Mello was on the single’s B-side.

Just an Ordinary Day for Dennis

New Jersey based Dennis Ferrer is playing here in possibly one of my most favourite situations, outside, in the sun, behind a bar at Kalua Porto Rafti. Old mukkas with Kerri Chandler who (it could be said) introduced Dennis to the world of music production, Ferrer’s first release dated 1998 Collaborating with Greg Smith on I Need your Love.

So, enjoy the mix, happy birthday to us and see you at Carnival!

Soundcloud – Mass Music Source

Soundcloud is developing into a great source for new music and Deep Space Orchestra is the recording pseudonym for a long-standing series of collaborations between Chris Barker and Si ‘Jazzchops’ Murray, who met in 2005 while watching Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit spin at a Body & Soul night.

Simon kindly sent me a promo of Mass Illusion that no doubt gives the start of this podcast a sun-shiny Balearic tip, but kicking back and lazing in the sun seems far from the boys minds as they focus on starting up their own label in addition to their constant stream of productions.

“We’ve got 3 releases coming out in the next 3 months or so on vinyl and via digital. The Inside Out ep on Winding Road with a remix of one of the tracks by The Revenge; an ep on Needwant with a Cottam remix of the lead track, and finally an ep on Kirk Degiorgio’s ART label – first techno tracks we’ve ever made!”

Micheal Mckenna also shared a rework of a George Duke classic I want you for myself on Soundcloud. We could debate which came first this version, or Crazy P’s Ron Basejam’s edit of the same but I managed to get this less vocal version first which was actually produced back in October 2006. Incidentally, George Duke was the musical director of the Nelson Mandela tribute concert at Wembley back in 1988 and that as close as a reference to the world cup you are going to get on this website.

Craig’s Hot Chip

Way back in 1994, I heard Throw and it blew my mind. Its simplicity, subtle variances and eternal build up quintessentially Carl Craig. It is well overdue that Carnivalism paid tribute to this king of Detroit, not once but twice.

Hot Chip’s album title track One Life Stand has been pawed, stretched and thumped into at 10 minute belter under his pseudonym Paperclip People. We Have Band’s disco themed Divisive is stripped down to a ploddingly raw downtempo track. Their orginal version’s video has some quite nice stop motion animation in it worth checking out after the jump.

I don’t know, the extremes that people go to just to get out of a snazzy dance routine.

Kings of Convenience star Erlend Øye adds vocals to Phonique’s “Casualties”. Oye is known for singing over his DJ sets and have given his distinctive voice to the likes of Royksopp and Ash. His melancholic tone is suited equally to down-tempo acoustic and livelier indie-disco in which he is represented in his latest band project the band Whitest Boy Alive.

Rules was released last year and is The Whitest Boy’s second album. Check out their nicely illustrated albums and tees at their website.

Interesting fact; Jarvis Cocker directed the music video for Erlend Oye’s 2004 single Sudden Rush.

Good To Know Chaz

Chaz (or Charles) Jankel has been around the (ahem) block a few times in his musical career teaming up with Ian Dury in the 70′s and going on to be part of his group Ian Dury & the Blockheads.

Chaz’s credits during this period include co-writing some of the groups biggest tracks “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”, “Spasticus Autisticus”. His solo career continued through the 80′s and is now enjoying a revival, being rediscovered by a younger audience.

Tirk Records have wisely taken Chaz into their fold ensuring that some of that some of his best work gets another time around, while promoting his newer productions.

Breaks Slyde back in

Matt’s penchant for breaks has been a little neglected in podcasts of late so it bears no suprise to see Finger Lickin’s Slyde muscling into proceedings.

Robin 12 Tree & Jason Laidback have been at it (musically) since childhood and finally crossing paths in 2002 with the track ‘Flow’. That track featured on one of the most memorable dance compilations of the time, Notting Hill Carnival’s institution Sancho Panza and their album “Float”.

Interesting fact; Jason was Kylie Minogue’s scratch DJ on her ‘Fever’ tour.

Jerry Fuchs R.I.P.

Brooklyn based drummer Gerhardt Fuchs tragically died last November. Jerry played percussion for the likes of LDC Soundsystem, Maserati, Moby, MSTRKRFT, Holy Ghost, Turing Machine, !!!, and is included on this mix by means of Juan Maclean of which he accompanied for live sets. In a world of digital music it is easy to forget what a difference the presence of live drums have on dance music and with the tireless velocity that Jerry played, he leaves a big hole on the New York music scene.

Radio station WNYU’s Beats in Space host Tim Sweeney paid a heartfelt tribute to Jerry that you can hear on his weekly podcast.

Juan described Jerry as “one of my best and most loyal friends. He was hands-down the best drummer I have ever played with or seen for that matter.”

You can see Jerry in action below with a live rendition of “Happy House” by The Juan Maclean.

Music always causes fireworks in our house so we hope that this unfortunately numbered edition does the same for you!

We’ve started on a bit of a political whinge with the first 3 tracks – Ball of Confusion (1970), Justice to the People (1973), Let the Dollar Circulate (1975). I can’t believe how poignant and relevant these song sound today, although written in an era when Nixon and the Vietnam War were firmly on people’s minds.

But before we fall into a territory better suited to the Paxmans or Dimblebys of this world, onto lighter things and a special nod of appreciation aimed towards an artist that features not once, twice but 3 times in this episode, and if you haven’t heard of The Revenge already, then perhaps its about time that you went outside a little more.

The Glaswegian producer has currently somewhat of a Midas touch. Otherwise know as Graeme Clark, he has been producing throughout his teens and has already over 15 releases to his name. That alongside a bagful of remixes have kept him well in demand not only on the decks, but in the studio also.

I wonder if he realises he has a doppelganger who invented the bionic ear?
