Funk the Nigerian Way!

His musical career began in the 70′s but Body and Soul was recorded in 1980.

William Onyeabor by all accounts currently runs his own flour mill and has been crowned High chief of Enugu…Now you can’t say fairer than that.

If this pricks your ears you might want to check this track out too When the Going is Smooth and Good, surely Africa’s take on Kraftwerk with some kinds word of wisdom chucked in.

“When the going is good, you will have many friends,
They will call you many names, they will say they love you, they will say need you
They will say you are great, and so on and so forth.

But when the going is tough, it is then they disappear,
And they never come back, when they come back they have come back to helping knocking you
Down down down down down down down.

That is bad, very very bad.”

But we shouldn’t scoff and the lyrics, musically this man was well ahead of his time – Caribou/Daphni’s Ye Ye sampled him, and don’t tell me that Hot Chip never heard of William Onyeabor.

Sunny days in January is rarer than rocking horse poo, so lets have a bit of Jamaican warmth courtesy of the Maytals.

Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.

SAY WHAT?!

Arguably the first Hip House track outside of Chicago. Its legend hardly needs covering and if you have not heard it before then back to music history classes you should go.

The Native tongues were the hip hop heavy-weights of their time punching out a hip hop template with a focus on African roots. De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers added ethniticity to a genre that would later influence the likes of Fugees & Arrested Development.

A huge influence for many, and how good was the film Purple Rain? Musical fan I ain’t but if you are going to act, write & perform in a movie THIS is exactly how you should do it. Yeah the story line is flimsy, the acting a little hammy, but who gives a shit when this little purple fella does his stuff?

Octave One formed in the late 80′s in America and have predominantly produced techno music. Their original version of Blackwater was released in 2000 on 430 West Records with the vocal talents of Ann Sanderson.
