You would hardly believe that the Carnivalism partnership has been going for 7 years now. And although our public appearances aren’t as prolific as they used to be, think of us more like your favourite takeaway delivery, bringing the Carnivalism vibes to you, rather than you coming to us. A gradual and beautiful introduction from  Deneice Williams is a precursor to a track that Norman Jay will inevitably play over carnival weekend. Free by J Marky & Makoto (feat.Deeizm) is a D&B rendition that featured in a podcast Norman recorded for Time Out last summer and is sure to set the crowds on fire this weekend.

After he parted company with BBC London 94.9 in February 2008 due to programming issues and although Jazzy B has done a sterling effort in filling the gap, you can’t help but feel London is a little less richer without the dulcet tones of Norman picking out some musical gems every Sunday.

In typical Carnivalism style Matt’s latest episode spreads genres. 60′s Philly Soul, the very first rap record from the 80s,Then there’s classic disco, late 80s Chicago house and electro house of today. Where the hell are you gonna put this your music library?

Paul Winley founded a doo-wop record label in 1956 that later on, became a hip hop label in 1976. Based on 125th Street, Harlem Paul was responsible for the “Super Disco Breaks” compilation albums that featured songs with popular breaks (of which would form the structure of hip hop songs) and were arguably the first breakbeat records in history.

Paul’s daughter Tanya “Sweet Tee”  Winley, as a result, was the first ever female rap artist to record a song in 1980 with her “Vicous Rap”. That was 2 years before Grandmaster Flash’s “the Message”.

History lesson over, class dismissed.

Joe Claussell recently played “God Created Woman” at one of the many closing parties at Mr C’s the End in Holborn London. Produced by Teddy Douglas, the track touched the spot with the Need II Soul fans.

Native to Baltimore, Douglas heads up A&R of Basement Boys Records and his professional DJ career spans back to the early eighties.

Recorded back in September and dedicated to a brilliant weekend slopping about in the mud.  Inspiration coming from Greg Wilson, Horsemeat Disco & Hercules Love Affair, Gilles Peterson & Todd Terje to name but a few. Although the rain was torrential nothing was going to stop us having fun at the 2008 Bestival.

While  Gilles Peterson entertained the Bollywood Tent with Todd Terje’s edit of Chic’s “I want your love”, Horsemat Disco and Greg Wilson ruled the roost in the Rilza stage.

Thats just a handful of the DJs. I haven’t even mentioned any of the live acts!

At last year’s event I discovered the deep techy sounds Will Saul, man behind Simple Records for the first time DJing in the Rizla lorry. When he dropped Wagon Cookin’s “Start to Play”, I was mesmerised by this hypnotic track. It is now one that is very hard to leave out of the record bag when playing out.

The Stanton Warriors have been a major influence in Matt’s record collection, filling a large portion of his breakbeat section. West Country’s Mark Yardley & Dominic B have been responsible for a record bag load of remixes and their own productions. Their reworks of Goose’s “Bring it On” and “Rocker” by Alter Ego are but 2 examples of an extensive catalogue that have earned them the international recognition that they deserve.

Our first discovery of them was back in 200o with their release Da Virus and the love affair continued from there on in.
